Approximately 5,000 ha (12,500 acres) of Brooklyn is included in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

The world heritage listed section of Brooklyn includes 2,600 ha (6,500 acres) of rainforest, of which more than 2,000 ha (5,000 acres) is virgin rainforest. The world heritage listed section of the property also includes a significant area of wet sclerophyll forest.

The rainforest and adjoining wet sclerophyll forest on Brooklyn occupies part of the Mt Carbine Tableland. The Mt Carbine Tableland is recognised as one of the two most important centres of biodiversity within the Wet Tropics, particularly for upland endemic species.

In addition to its world heritage status:

  • The Wet Tropics Bioregion component of Brooklyn is within an area that is being assessed for designation as a global ‘biodiversity hotspot’.
  • Several thousand hectares of Brooklyn falls within an area identified by Birdlife International as an ‘Important Bird Area’. This means it has been recognised as one of the most important areas in the world for the conservation of birds.
