Faure Island Sanctuary
AWC acquired the Faure Island pastoral lease in 1999. The lease had previously been held for approximately 95 years by the local Hoult family of Denham, and stocked with Angora Goats or Merino Sheep. Water was originally sourced from shallow coastal wells, but an artesian bore was drilled in the 1920’s to supplement stock water. The unusually good condition of the habitat on Faure Island is testament to the skillful land management practices undertaken by the Hoult family. However, weeds such as Buffell Grass and
Boxthorn, and feral goats and cats, are a legacy of past use as a pastoral venture. AWC is committed to a new future, managing the island for conservation outcomes.
