Landscaping Context

While Mt Zero-Taravale is a large property in its own right, it is also strategically positioned to act as a catalyst for efforts to protect biodiversity across a much larger area including adjacent public and private land.
Mt Zero-Taravale is bordered to the northeast by the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and other areas of National Park and State Forest (covering in total 54,000 ha or 135,000 acres).
To the southeast of Mt Zero-Taravale lies the Townsville Field Training Area (approximately 250,000 ha or 625,000 acres), a Commonwealth-owned property managed by the Defence Department.
Accordingly, Mt Zero-Taravale is located as the central parcel of land in a broader landscape which contains exceptional biodiversity values. One of AWC’s objectives is to ensure that the establishment and management of Mt Zero-Taravale Sanctuary acts as a catalyst for conservation efforts across the larger landscape.
