Newhaven sanctuary covers 262,000 ha (650,000 acres) of the P2 and P5 subregions of the Great Sandy Desert Bioregion. Due to its location at the far eastern extent of the Great Sandy Desert Bioregion, Newhaven also contains elements of the MacDonnell Ranges and Sturt Plain Bioregions.

The nearest large town is Alice Springs, 360 km (4 hours drive) to the south-east. The small community of Nyirripi is 10 kms west of Newhaven’s western boundary and the community of Yuendumu is 80 km to the north-east.
