Scotia occurs on the boundary of the arid and semi-arid climatic zones, with an average rainfall of 250 mm. The region experiences hot summers (December to March) with mean daily maximum temperatures of over 30°C and a maximum of 47.8ºC. Summer mean daily minimum temperatures are over 15°C. Winters are cool with mean daily maximum temperatures of ≤17°C and a maximum of 32.3°C. Winter mean daily minimum temperature is ≤6°C, and frosts are common.
Rainfall is highly irregular, with no discernible seasonal pattern. Thunderstorms are common during summer, although they frequently produce little if any rainfall. Evaporation rates are high, with average annual evaporation rates six times the average annual rainfall.
