Climate

Wongalara is located in a monsoon climatic zone, which experiences a distinct summer wet season and winter dry season. The intense ‘wet season’ usually extends from December until April, with the cooler dry season from May until September. The ‘build up’ to the wet occurs in October and November, bringing hot and humid conditions. Frosts are rare.

The rainfall records from Ngukrr, 70 kilometres southeast of Wongalara indicate an average annual rainfall of about 800mm.

Wongalara contains numerous braided streams and wetland areas, and since none of the roads in the area are sealed, access for all road vehicles is restricted for much of the wet season.

The temperature at Wongalara varies from a mean maximum of 31.3° and mean minimum of 20.9° in January to a mean maximum of 25.3° and mean minimum of 11.2° in June.
