Landscape Context

Wongalara is set in a landscape with strong ecological integrity – there has been no significant land clearing in the bioregion since European settlement, and the predominant land use has been low intensity pastoralism. The surrounding land uses are predominantly pastoral to the south and west. To the east and north Wongalara borders Arnhemland.

Wongalara effectively doubles the level of protection afforded by all other reserves in the Gulf Falls Bioregion, and offers an oasis of energetic fire management that provides a focal point for the restoration of appropriate fire regimes well beyond its boundaries.

4 broad vegetation types that are not represented in any formal reserves are well represented on Wongalara, as are an additional 4 ecosystems that have been identified as nationally and/or bioregionally threatened.
