The Mulga Lands Bioregion, in which Bowra is located, is recognised by the Federal Government as a high priority for conservation. In part, this is because only a very small percentage of the bioregion (less than 3%) is protected in conservation reserves. Large areas of the bioregion are degraded: many ecosystems are threatened and their condition continues to decline.
It is, therefore, critically important that a property like Bowra is managed for conservation. Located in the heart of the Mulga Lands, Bowra provides a refuge within the broader landscape for a range of species, including many restricted range species such as Hall's Babbler.
However, the acquisition of Bowra by AWC is only the first step in providing for its long-term protection. Active land management will be required to address the key threats to the future of Bowra and its wildlife.
The key management priorities at Bowra will include :
- The control of feral animals, especially goats, rabbits, foxes, pigs and cats;
- Management of weeds such as crownbeard, noogoora burr and buffel grass;
- Erosion control;
- Maintenance of infrastructure including roads and fences;
- Fire management; and
- Managing visitation by birdwatchers and other nature lovers.
AWC will also implement a rigorous science program measuring the ecological health of Bowra and undertaking scientific research on key issues affecting biodiversity.
The property will remain open to birdwatchers, and Friends of Bowra may wish to volunteer their time to assist with the land management program and elements of the science program (for more information on visiting and volunteering at Bowra, see the Friends of Bowra page).
Implementing an active land management program at Bowra, informed by the best available science, will require a significant investment of resources. We need your help to ensure that Bowra is protected forever from threats such as feral animals, weeds and wildfire.
