The ancient soil is stretched like a tight skin over the massive sandstone plateau in the heart of Pungalina. Woodlands are dominated by stringybarks and bloodwoods, punctuated frequently by stands of northern cypress pine. This tree is declining across northern Australia because of the high frequency of intense fires. Pungalina still retains a relatively large population of these bottle-green trees, and the introduction of careful fire management will ensure their persistence.
