Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund

Australia’s marine and freshwater habitats are home to an incredible diversity of wildlife including many species unique to Australia. Sadly, however, many of these species are being pushed to the edge of extinction by pollution, coastal development, over-fishing and climate change.

However, the establishment of the Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund (SACF) by Sydney Aquarium in partnership with AWC, promises to provide new hope for threatened species such as, the Grey Nurse Shark, marine turtles and seahorses and seadragons.

Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund(SACF)

Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund is a unique partnership between AWC and Sydney Aquarium Limited.

Sydney Aquarium Limited is a major corporation, listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). It operates the Sydney Aquarium at Darling Harbour. The Sydney Aquarium is one of the world’s leading aquariums, playing a vital role in raising public awareness of the plight of Australia’s threatened aquatic wildlife.

AWC is proud to be associated with Sydney Aquarium. We believe the partnership between AWC and Sydney Aquarium has the potential to make a very substantial contribution to the conservation of Australia’s freshwater and marine biodiversity. Certainly, this kind of collaboration between a corporation listed on the ASX and a non-profit organisation represents a new model for conservation in Australia, which we hope to replicate in other areas.

Donations to the Fund

Donations in support of the Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund can be made to AWC. All donations over AU$2 are tax deductible.

The Sydney Aquarium receives over 1.3 million visitors every year. All visitors to the Aquarium will now be given the opportunity to make a practical contribution to saving our aquatic wildlife by making a donation in support of the Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund.

What the Fund will do

The Fund will be based at Oceanworld Manly. The facilities at Oceanworld will be available for strategic research that promotes the conservation of aquatic biodiversity.

The new Fund will protect Australia’s aquatic wildlife by supporting:

  • projects to protect and restore populations of threatened species, including captive breeding of the critically endangered Grey Nurse Shark;
  • research to unlock the secrets to survival for endangered aquatic life; and
  • public awareness of the threats to our aquatic ecosystems.

As part of our commitment to the conservation of freshwater and marine wildlife, AWC is developing plans for key projects to protect the freshwater habitat of the Mitchell River (Brooklyn Sanctuary) and the Fitzroy River (Mornington Sanctuary) as well as marine environments linked to AWC sanctuaries.
