Mornington Sanctuary - Programs

Locating cattle for removal
Mornington sanctuary

With support from its donors, AWC is implementing an active program of on-ground management designed to provide a secure future for the stunning wildlife of Mornington sanctuary. AWC’s key management priorities at Mornington include:

  • Development and implementation of a fire management strategy with the restoration of biodiversity as the primary objective.
  • Staged removal of cattle.
  • The establishment of a scientific research centre to attract leading scientists to Mornington to investigate all aspects of savanna health, including intensive studies of the Gouldian Finch and other seed-eating birds.
  • A broad-scale system of biodiversity surveys to monitor the long-term recovery of flora and fauna following the removal of cattle. The recovery of riparian habitat is a priority. This project is conducted in collaboration with the Tropical Savannas CRC.
  • The preparation of vegetation (habitat) and geology maps of the property.
  • Weed control, particularly removal of Parkinsonia and Calotropis.
  • Removal of feral animals, particularly donkeys, horses and cats.
  • The development of minimal impact and educational visitor facilities including a campground, interpretive walking trails, evening lectures and a visitor’s information and resource centre.
