Feral herbivore control at Artesian Range

Feral herbivore control at Artesian Range

Feral herbivore densities are low across the Artesian Range Sanctuary.  The rugged and deeply dissected sandstone in the north-west is largely inaccessible to feral herbivores.  In the savannah country in the south and east of the sanctuary, feral cattle and pigs represent the most significant threat. AWC land management staff implement an active program of shooting to reduce densities.

  • 20 feral pigs were removed from wetlands in the Artesian Range in 2016.
  • The target density for feral cattle is 0.2 animals per square kilometre (or one feral animal per 500 hectares).
