July 2002: Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is set to acquire its first sanctuaries in NSW (Scotia sanctuary) and South Australia (Yookamurra, Buckaringa and Dakalanta sanctuaries) after shareholders of Earth Sanctuaries Ltd (ESL), the company founded by Dr John Wamsley, last night approved the sale of four of its properties to AWC.

The approval of ESL shareholders means that the four properties will be transferred to AWC by mid-July.

Chairman of AWC, Martin Copley, said the ESL shareholder vote was a win for private sector conservation in Australia.“

AWC will, when the acquisition is completed, own 11 properties across Australia protecting a diversity of wildlife and habitats including threatened mammals such as the Bilby, the Numbat and the Mala.”

“The restructure of ESL ensures that it is in a strong position to continue its enormous contribution to threatened species conservation in Australia.”
